Last Friday a couple hundred gays and their friends chased a small group of young Christian preachers out of the Castro, calling them "bigots" and chanting "Don’t come back!"

I wish I’d been there.

The video of the event, or rather part of the event, has now been posted on YouTube, along with a written account by one of the preachers, who claims that they were both physically and sexually assaulted.

"It wasn’t long before the violence turned to perversion. They were touching and grabbing me, and trying to shove things in my butt, and even trying to take off my pants - basically trying to molest me..."

Unfortunately for him the video doesn’t capture any of this particular "molestation," but our little gay uprising has predictably garnered both scorn and ridicule, and our community is accused of hostility and intolerance, and all weekend I wrestled with my conscience over the primal anger that still sweeps through me when I watch this video.

APEC leaders to push trade as way out of crisis current events
Link #142203 submitted by Logotype702 on Nov 19, 2008 11:19pm.   (+100XP)
http://www.reuters.com/article/vcCandidateFeed2/idUSTRE4AI4FY20081119
One idea gaining traction ahead of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in Peru is to forge a regional free-trade zone from existing bilateral pacts of APEC's 21 members, a diverse lot that also includes Russia, Mexico, Australia, Canada and Indonesia.

Leaders of the world's biggest economies last week called for rapid economic stimulus packages to stabilize financial markets and for new efforts to reach a global free trade deal.

President George W. Bush and the leaders of other APEC countries, which together account for more than half of global economic output, will use their summit to push again for a deal under the so-called Doha round of world trade talks.

Weapons are instruments of fear; they are not a wise man's tools.
He uses them only when he has no choice.
Peace and quiet are dear to his heart.

If you delight in killing, you cannot fulfill yourself.

Please...add your own, or snag someone else's. Because one man's bad gift is another man's bad gift...in a good kind of way.

vocito the wired
Link #142197 submitted by bear on Nov 19, 2008 08:26pm.   (+150XP)
http://code.google.com/p/vocito
Google has released a new application for Mac users called "Vocito" that puts GrandCentral calling right on your desktop. It integrates with OS X's address book, Automater app, and third-party applications like Blacktree's QuickSilver to let you start a GrandCentral-powered call no matter what you're doing on your machine.

Similar to JaJah and Jaxtr, Vocito's system for setting up calls involves you first picking who you want to call, then choosing which one of your GrandCentral-connected phones you want it to be connected from. You then hit dial and GrandCentral does the rest. It's basically the same exact thing you've been able to do with GrandCentral's Web interface for years, but now you can have a deeper level of integration across your entire system.

This deeper integration centers around a slick and simple Mac taskbar drop-down application that's directly integrated with the Address Book app. It lets you start a call almost as fast as doing a Spotlight search. This is made a little easier if you're a Quicksilver user, since you can search for contacts and call them via Vocito with the included plug-in. In most cases, this worked for me with about six keyboard strokes, which I found faster than picking up my phone to dial a contact.

Residents of an Austin, Texas, neighborhood undergoing a federally mandated sewer replacement noticed that, for several weeks starting in September, the work crews would spend the first three hours of their 12-hour days digging a huge hole in the street, and the last three hours re-filling and paving over it (repeating the process each day)...

Dutch designer Eric Klarenbeek, 29, has developed jewelry consisting of tiny crystals or flowers that hang directly from the eye via micro-thin medical wire attached to either prescription or blank contact lenses and, in the light, give the appearance of tears streaming down the cheek. He expects to hit the market soon, according to an October report in London's Daily Mail, at a price of the equivalent of around $325. Though the adornments appear to be painful or dangerous, Klarenbeek said users of his prototypes so far have been "amazed" at their comfort.

Chuck Klosterman reviews Chinese Democracy it's the arts
Link #142192 submitted by bozino on Nov 19, 2008 05:51pm.   (+280XP)
http://www.avclub.com/content/feature/chuck_klosterman_reviews
Reviewing Chinese Democracy is not like reviewing music. It's more like reviewing a unicorn. Should I primarily be blown away that it exists at all? Am I supposed to compare it to conventional horses? To a rhinoceros? Does its pre-existing mythology impact its actual value, or must it be examined inside a cultural vacuum, as if this creature is no more (or less) special than the remainder of the animal kingdom? I've been thinking about this record for 15 years; during that span, I've thought about this record more than I've thought about China, and maybe as much as I've thought about the principles of democracy. This is a little like when that grizzly bear finally ate Timothy Treadwell: Intellectually, he always knew it was coming. He had to. His very existence was built around that conclusion. But you still can't psychologically prepare for the bear who eats you alive, particularly if the bear wears cornrows.
